We intend a Living Lab is a user-centered, open-innovation ecosystem, integrating concurrent researches and innovation processes within a public-private-people partnership. We want to be a Living Lab acting as an experimental laboratory for the individuation of adequate strategies for Community Driven Sustainable Development in developing countries.
We want to invite tourists, researchers, hacktivists and innovators to take part in the co-creation, exploration, experimentation and evaluation of innovative ideas, scenarios, concepts and related technological artefacts to be usable in real life use cases. This approach allows all involved stakeholders to concurrently consider both the global performance of a product or service and its potential adoption by users at a local scale. Jamaica needs to face many challenges in education, security, access to adequate technologies, logistics, food production, soil regeneration, sustainable tourism, administrative efficiency, healthcare and welfare.
This is why we think that the involvement of the local community in a deeper dialogue with tourists can create a safe social space for designing and experiencing their own future, even with the creation of a Small Business Incubator to create a thriving local economy for a better local future.
Our conceptual frame regarding the creation of a Living Lab points to work toward the implementation of the 17 SDGS.
We are already imagining to test and export to the wider community several projects divided in clusters linked to our Worldview, so to be able to take decisions in a systemic way while enhancing positive interactions among the goals.
1. Worldview SDGs:
Worldview values include demands for a new social structure. Countries should themselves decide how they want to live with each other and nature in a responsible, socially just way. The goal is diversity rather than homogeneity and thriving sustainability.
Goal 3. Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
Goal 5. Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
Goal 10. Reduce inequality within and among countries
Goal 16. Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
Goal 17. Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development
Social values include participation by all, expressing that we are a “communion of subjects.” And the right to define how we want to live with nature and in a community.
Goal 1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere
Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
Goal 4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
Goal 11. Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
3. Ecological SDGs
Ecological values include clean soil, air and water, shelter and fresh local food in abundance while living in a diverse ecosystem, within a permissible “ecological footprint.”
Goal 6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
Goal 7. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
Goal 13. Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
Goal 14. Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
Goal 15. Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
4. Economic SDGs
Economic values include local economies under control of local democracy, and the subservience of economics to ecology rather than the reverse.
Goal 8. Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
Goal 9. Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
Goal 12. Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
With this theoretical and practical mainframe we are encompassing different visions and giving more attention to the changes and awareness that every individual and every community is called to live day by day in the spirit of unification that is necessary to achieve a better quality of life worldwide.
